The Matamata College Lacrosse team have had a very successful 2025 season. Together as a team there has been immense improvement of skills.
For the first time ever the Senior lacrosse team made the Waikato premier 1 grade final, where they came away with the silver medal after a well fought battle. Due to the amazing results the team had throughout the season we qualified for the New Zealand lacrosse Secondary Schools (NZSS) competition. Only the top 4 teams from Auckland and from Waikato qualify for this.
NZSS was a 2-day tournament, on day 1 the team played 3 pool play games. Starting off with a rematch against St Peters (the team who won the final) and narrowly losing 4-2. After this game we came up against MAGS and Whangaparaoa winning 12-0 and 11-0.
On day 2 of the tournament first up we had a tough battled semifinal against Epsom who went on to win the whole tournament. This meant we were playing for 3rd/4th place in our final game. Matamata College has never won a medal at NZSS before, so this was our opportunity to do so. The final was an amazing game by the team, in some rough conditions with lots of rain, wind, and mud but the team pushed through. We came away with the 7-4 win in the final securing the bronze medal and the first ever NZSS medal for Matamata College.
Although the tournament had amazing results, it was also a great opportunity as a team and experience for the players. Thank-you to all of our sponsors and everybody who helped make this tournament possible!
